China is a communist country with the largest population in the
world at 1.3 billion.
Initially Chinese companies listed their shares on the Hong Kong
exchange but today some Chinese stocks list only on the exchange
in Shanghai. Hong Kong and China have a long history of commercial dependence
prior to the 1997 hand over of Hong Kong from Britain. The
"Hang Seng", developed by the Hang Seng Bank, is an index of
companies listed on the Hong Kong exchange. It tracks 42
companies from both HK and China and contains most of the Chinese
commercial giants. Hong Kong keeps its HK Dollar pegged to the
US Dollar. The rest of China uses the
Yuan (also known as the RMB) but this is a tightly managed
currency and not widely traded.
